Egoists

I met Sasha Mizgulin (Мизгулин Александр), lead singer of Egoists on the bus on my way up to Gornaya-Karusel to go snowboarding on February 16th.  I was on my way up for my 4th and final day of snowboarding in Russia, with a few days left for events and shenanigans.

We met because when I sat down on the bus, my wallet fell out of my pocket and the kind lady picked it up and handed it to me!  I thanked her profusely and then she (seen below photobombing, lol) began speaking to me in Russian.  I was instantly lost, then Sasha jumped in with his amazing command of the English language to save the day and translate.

Within a few minutes, he and I were engaged on all kinds of subjects, eventually realizing that we were both songwriters!  Very cool!  Sasha started telling me his backstory.  After living in Egypt for a number of years, he moved back to his native Russia, to the city of Sochi.

He told me that his band is called Egoists.  Great name!  Then he started telling me of this video he was finishing up where he weighed himself down underwater with an oxygen tank disguised behind him while he lip-synced the lyrics and played his guitar underwater.  What an original concept!

He showed me an incomplete but very well made video and said he still had a bit of work to do.  I asked if I could share it with all of you once he was finished with it and it was an enthusiastic yes.

(The lyrics and a behind the scenes clip are below the video.)

Without further ado, I present: Egoists – “Maiden of the Sea”

Egoists

“Maiden of the sea”

Share the wonder be my guide
To your kingdom where the sunken ships rest
I walk by the blue divide
Alone silent quest

Maiden of the sea
Going deeper slowly with me
Through aquamarine
I feel like we’ve been
Descending forever
Through aquamarine
Descending together
The lights getting dim

Going down where corals grow
Ride the dolphins into bottomless rift
Where the dead men keep their gold
My mind is adrift

Maiden of the sea
Going deeper slowly with me
Through aquamarine
I feel like we’ve been
Descending forever
Through aquamarine
Descending together
The lights getting dim

Dark seawater now I breathe
Last acquaintance of the pale morning sky
Neptune’s domain underneath
Where your secrets lie

Maiden of the sea
Going deeper slowly with me
Through aquamarine
I feel like we’ve been
Descending forever
Through aquamarine
Descending together
The lights getting dim
